A city in Fergana Province, Republic of Uzbekistan. It is located in the western part of the Fergana Basin, downstream of the Sokh River. It has a population of 206,100 (estimated in 2001), and an urban area of ​​248,740 (estimated in 2019). It is a junction of the railway and road leading to Tashkent, and the Great Fergana Canal passes through the south of the city. It appeared in history in the 10th century as a caravan route from China. It was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, but was rebuilt in the early 18th century, and the independent government of Kokand Khanate was established, becoming a center of cotton and silk trade. It was occupied by Russian troops in 1876. After the establishment of the Soviet regime, it became a center of the cotton industry equipped with modern machinery, and the food industry, such as butter, also flourished. In addition, the chemical industry, such as oils and fats, pesticides, superphosphate fertilizer, and sulfuric acid, petroleum refining, and electrical industry are also developing.
