Danevirke (English spelling)

Japanese: ダーネビルケ（英語表記）Danevirke

A group of earthworks running roughly east-west along the southern tip of the Jutland Peninsula. The name means "Danish Redoubts," and they were built to protect against attacks from the south, i.e. from Germany. Construction can be roughly divided into three phases. The first phase was built around 730 on both sides of the southern part of the Schlei Bay, and the trading post of Hedeby (Haithabu), which was later built, was south of this defensive line. The second phase was built in the early 9th century, south of Hedeby. The third phase was built in the first half of the 10th century, as a semicircular wall that largely surrounded Hedeby. The second phase of construction is described in the Annals of the Frankish Kingdom (808), where it is written that the Danish king Godfred marched to Sliesthorp (Hedeby) and built earthworks running east-west to defend the border against the Saxons.

ユトランド半島南端をほぼ東西に走る土塁群。〈デンマーク人の堡塁〉を意味し，南すなわちドイツからの攻撃に備えたものである。建設はほぼ3期に分かれる。第1期は730年ころ，シュライ湾南部の両側に位置し，のちに建設される交易地ヘゼビュー(ハイタブ)はこの防衛線より南にある。第2期は9世紀初め，ヘゼビューより南に建設された。第3期は10世紀前半で，ヘゼビューを大きく囲む半円形の壁として構築された。　第2期工事については《フランク王国年代記》の808年の項に，デンマーク人の王ゴトフレドがスリエストルプSliesthorp(ヘゼビュー)に進軍し，ザクセン人に対する境界を防衛すべく東西に走る土塁を築いたとある。
