Echinopluteus - Echinopluteus (English spelling)

A floating larva of the sea urchin phylum, Echinodermata. The developmental process of sea urchins involves cleavage followed by a morula, blastula, gastrula, and prism before developing into an echinopluteus. Usually, this larva starts out with four arms, progresses through a six-arm stage, and metamorphoses into a juvenile sea urchin at the eight-arm stage. A calcium-based larval skeleton is formed within the arms. The echinopluteus period lasts for several months in normal sea urchins, during which time the larva feeds on floating diatoms.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ウニ類の浮遊幼生。ウニ類の発生過程は、卵割ののち、桑実胚(そうじつはい)、胞胚、原腸胚、プリズムを経てエキノプルテウスになる。通常この幼生は4腕に始まり、6腕期を経過して、8腕期で変態して稚ウニになる。腕の中にはカルシウム性の幼生骨格が形成されている。エキノプルテウスの期間は、普通のウニでは数か月で、この間は、浮遊珪藻(けいそう)を餌(えさ)として摂取している。
