Killer satellite

Japanese: キラー衛星 - きらーえいせい（英語表記）killer satellite

A military satellite designed to attack or disrupt other countries' artificial satellites. It is also known as an "anti-satellite satellite" or "anti-satellite weapon." Russia, China and other countries are said to be developing it. The Ministry of Defense plans to add this satellite to the list of targets monitored by a space surveillance radar (Sanyo Onoda City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) that is scheduled to begin operation in fiscal 2023, and will establish a new space domain specialist unit within the Air Self-Defense Force to constantly monitor the situation in outer space and share information with the U.S. military.

他国の人工衛星に対する攻撃や妨害活動を目的とした軍事衛星。｢衛星攻撃衛星｣｢対衛星兵器｣とも呼ばれる。ロシアや中国などが開発を進めているとされる。防衛省は2023年度からの運用を目指す宇宙監視レーダー(山口県山陽小野田市)の監視対象に同衛星を加え、航空自衛隊に宇宙領域専門部隊を新設して宇宙空間の状況を常時監視し、米軍とも情報を共有するとしている。
