French scholar. Presumably born in Saint-Émilion, southern France. As a judicial figure, he served as president of the Supreme Court and the Court of Justice of Bordeaux, and was involved in the witch trials in the Basque Country and the Protestant revolts in southern France. He wrote Latin poetry in the humanist vein and books such as "Education for Young Princes," but as a writer he is better known for his work on alchemy, having written "A Manual for the Reestablishment of Natural Philosophy" and "The Mysteries of Hermetic Philosophy" (both 1623). The former is a kind of natural philosophy heavily influenced by Neoplatonism and Gnostic thought, and develops the alchemy process from raw matter to the completion of gold, superimposing it on the creation of heaven and earth and the formation of all things.

フランスの学者。南フランスのサン･テミリオンで生まれたと推定される。司法界の人として，ボルドーの最高法院院長や法令院院長を務め，バスク地方の魔女裁判，南フランスの新教徒反乱等に関係した。人文主義の流れを汲むラテン語の詩作や《若き君主のための教育論》等の著書があるが，著述家としては錬金術の分野でより多く知られ，《自然哲学再興の手引書》と《ヘルメス哲学の秘法》(ともに1623)を著した。前者は新プラトン主義やグノーシス思想の影響が濃い一種の自然哲学で，原物質から黄金の完成へ向かう錬金工程を，天地の創造と万物の形成過程に重ね合わせながら展開している。
