Around 1560-? French scholar. Presumably born in Saint-Émilion, southern France. As a judicial figure, he served as president of the Supreme Court and the Court of Justice of Bordeaux, and was involved in the witch trials in the Basque Country and the Protestant revolts in southern France. He wrote Latin poetry in the humanist vein and books such as "Education for Young Princes," but as a writer he is better known for his work on alchemy, having written "A Manual for the Reestablishment of Natural Philosophy" and "The Mysteries of Hermetic Philosophy" (both 1623). The former is a kind of natural philosophy heavily influenced by Neoplatonism and Gnostic thought, and develops the alchemy process from raw matter to the completion of gold, superimposing it on the creation of heaven and earth and the formation of all things.
