1867‐1915 Turkish poet. Born in Istanbul, he was mentored by the great masters of Tanzimat literature while studying at Galatasaray Lycee. While working as a government official and teacher, he was one of the central figures in the modern literary movement with a strong cosmopolitan and Western-oriented tendency, which was founded in the magazine Selveti Funun. He was also interested in ideological and social issues, and is famous for his poem Ancient History, which satirizes the tyranny of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II.
