Trapani (English spelling)

Japanese: トラパニ(英語表記)Trapani
Trapani (English spelling)
A port city on the island of Sicily in southwest Italy. It is the capital of the province of Trapani in Sicily. It is located on the northwestern tip of the island, about 80 km west-southwest of Palermo. In ancient times it was called Drepana (the origin of the word is from the Greek sickle) because of the shape of the promontory. It was under Carthage's control and served as a base for Carthage during the First Punic War (264-241 BC), but after Carthage was defeated in the Battle of the Egadi Islands (241 BC) it became a Roman territory and continued to prosper. Currently, tuna fishing and marble mining are carried out here, and it is also famous as a salt export port with salt fields nearby. There is a 17th-century Baroque-style chapel. It was heavily bombed during World War II. Population 69,273 (1991 estimate).
