Both parties clap their hands together as a sign that a contract or settlement has been concluded. It is also called tejime. The custom of teuchi is thought to have originated from the practice of worshiping gods or inviting them to make vows in front of the gods. Teuchi is also performed in business transactions at horse dealers and Tori no Ichi festivals, as well as in settling feuds. Even today, in the yakuza world, teuchi ceremonies for dispute resolution are solemn rituals that appoint an arbitrator. In folk societies, the custom of teuchi can be seen at village gatherings and weddings, and in some places the sake that the matchmaker brings to the bride's family when she is engaged is called teuchizake.
