Sasara sekkyo - Sasara sekkyo

Japanese:
Sasara sekkyo - Sasara sekkyo
A sermon told while rubbing a bamboo stalk. Volume 3 of Intei Miscellany (completed in 1843) contains a picture of a bamboo stalk stalk, and considering that the stalk is used by the stalk monk in the Noh play Jinen Koji, this practice has a long history. The picture shows a large umbrella standing on a straw mat, beneath which a man in vulgar attire is standing and telling a sermon while rubbing a bamboo stalk, while several men and women are listening intently around him with their heads bowed. While Edo-period sekkyo (sekkyo joruri) was performed in a simple hut with shamisen and marionettes instead of bamboo stalks, this is street performance and gives a good indication of the old style of sekkyo from the late Middle Ages.
