In the Ottoman Empire, Christian children (aged 8 to 20 years) were forcibly conscripted every three to eight years to become Muslims and acquire Turkish-Islamic customs as chamberlains and Janissaries in the royal court. Particularly talented children served as aides to the Sultan and became high-ranking officials. This system, which began in the 14th century, was abolished in the mid-17th century.
