In a broad sense, it is a general term for edible fruit trees of the Citrus genus of the Rutaceae family and is used synonymously with citrus fruits, but in the narrow sense it refers to several species of the Satsuma mandarin species that bear small fruits, such as the Japanese Satsuma mandarin and Kishu mandarin, and sometimes also includes some species of the bitter orange species, such as the Natsumikan and Naruto mandarin.
