A Latin translation of the Greek theos apo mēchanēs, meaning "the deity of the clockwork" or "the deity that appears by a clockwork mechanism." By extension, it refers to an easy solution to overcome a difficult situation. In ancient Greek drama, when the conflict in the play escalated to an unsolvable situation, a god would often suddenly appear, reveal a truth that was not visible to the human eye, provide a clue to overcome the difficulty, and end the play. To make the god appear in such a scene, a kind of crane-like mechanism was devised, which was called a "clockwork mechanism." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
