The capital of Prince Edward Island, a province in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern Canada. It is located at the head of Hillsborough Bay facing the Northumberland Strait. Settled by the French in the early 18th century, it was called Port-la-Joie, but after 1763 it came under British rule and was renamed after Charlotte, wife of George III. It is a shipping port for agricultural products, mainly potatoes, and has good port facilities. Wool textiles, canned goods, and machinery industries are found here. It is also known as the site of the first joint conference held in 1864 by the Canadian Atlantic colonies to discuss the issue of amalgamation, and the site of the Canada Centennial Federal Building.
