It is a revival of the name Danjodai under the Ritsuryo system, and was established on May 22, 1869 (Meiji 2) to replace the Inspectors of the Criminal Law. The chief was called Yin and the vice chief was called Hitoshi, the same names as in the Ritsuryo system, and their duties were to patrol various areas and denounce violations, as well as to spy on remnants of the former shogunate who were rebelling against the new government and political conspirators. …
