One of the legal procedures in the Edo period. It was a procedure for the courts to settle cases. When the plaintiff filed a lawsuit against the defendant with a complaint, the court would have the plaintiff serve it on the defendant, with the defendant then submitting a written reply. The plaintiff and defendant would then face each other (oral argument), a hearing would be held, and a judgment would be given. The progress of the proceedings was left to the discretion of the parties involved, and it was considered desirable to settle the case privately. Therefore, even after the lawsuit was filed, officials would repeatedly recommend a private settlement, and sometimes it would be established at the plaintiff's request alone. Cases related to this procedure were called "entries and exits," or "public affairs," or simply "public affairs," and included disputes over the boundaries of provinces, counties, villages, fields, and farmland, disputes over the use of mountains, fields, and fodder fields for polluted water, felling of standing trees, unreasonableness, arguments, injury, unlawful inducement, magistrates, marriage, succession, business, and loans and loans.
