Japanese: 秦八体 - しんはったい（英語表記）Qín bā tǐ

Eight styles of calligraphy used in the Qin Dynasty of China. When the writing system was standardized, the styles of the six eastern countries were abolished and established. According to the Xu Shen Shuowen Jiezi, these eight styles are: Large Seal Script, Small Seal Script, Engraved Script, Insect Script, Moin Script, Signed Script, Shen Script, and Clerical Script. However, while Large Seal Script, Small Seal Script, Insect Script (Bird Insect Script), and Clerical Script refer to the style of characters, the other four are classified by use: Engraved Script was used for divisors, Moin Script was used for seals, Signed Script was used for inscriptions, and Shen Script was used for inscriptions on weapons.

中国，秦で用いられた八つの書体。文字統一の際，東方六国の書体を廃して定めたもので，許慎《説文解字》叙によれば，大篆（だいてん），小篆，刻符，虫書，摹印（もいん），署書，殳書（しゆしよ），隷書の八つをいう。ただし，大篆，小篆，虫書(鳥虫書)，隷書の四つが字体を意味するのに対し，他の4種は，刻符は割符（わりふ）用，摹印は印璽（いんじ）用，署書は題字用，殳書は武器の刻辞用というように用途による分類である。
