Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 741-775. He held the so-called "Headless Council" in Hierica (754), which was attended by neither the Pope nor other Eastern Patriarchs, in order to fully enforce his father Leo III's iconoclasm (a policy banning the worship of sacred images), and this led to a deterioration in relations with Rome. Externally, he skillfully controlled the Islamic forces at the time of the transition from the Umayyad Caliphate to the Abbasid Caliphate, and Bulgaria, which was in the midst of internal conflict, but he was unable to prevent the Italian advance into the Lombards, and lost the Governorate of Ravenna, his bridgehead in Western Europe.

ビザンティン皇帝。在位741‐775年。父レオ3世のイコノクラスム(聖画崇拝禁止策)を本格化する目的で，教皇も他の東方教会の総主教たちも欠席したいわゆる〈頭のない教会会議〉をヒエリアで開催(754)，ローマとの関係の悪化をも招いた。対外的にはウマイヤ朝からアッバース朝への転換期にあったイスラム勢力と内紛に揺れるブルガリアを巧みに抑えたが，イタリアのランゴバルド進出は防げず，西欧の橋頭堡ラベンナ総督府を失った。
