718‐775 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 741-775. He held the so-called "Headless Council" in Hierica (754), which was attended by neither the Pope nor other Eastern Patriarchs, in order to fully enforce his father Leo III's iconoclasm (a policy banning the worship of sacred images), and this led to a deterioration in relations with Rome. Externally, he skillfully controlled the Islamic forces at the time of the transition from the Umayyad Caliphate to the Abbasid Caliphate, and Bulgaria, which was in the midst of internal conflict, but he was unable to prevent the Italian advance into the Lombards, and lost the Governorate of Ravenna, his bridgehead in Western Europe.
