They are also called Azusa Shrine Maidens, Spirit mediums, Itako, etc. They are people whose job it is to communicate with living spirits and dead spirits and convey their intentions. This job is almost exclusively for women, and the name seems to have come from the dancing girls (Ichiko) who perform Kagura dance in front of the altar. The shamans of the northern peoples and the Noro of Okinawa still retain the ancient traditions of this faith. Widely seen in the Tohoku region, Spirit mediums are still a viable profession, albeit on a small scale, today. [Oda Koji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
