A city on the south bank of the Mohawk River in eastern New York State, USA. Population 61,821 (2000). A commercial and industrial center, it is home to the central research center of General Electric, one of the world's largest diversified companies. Other thriving industries are the pharmaceutical and printing industries. The city was established in 1661 by the Dutch, who purchased land from the native Mohawk people (American Indians). It developed as an important river port early on, and saw rapid urban growth in the 1820s and 1830s with the opening of the Erie Canal and railroads. It is also the home of Union University, which has a long history, having been founded in 1795.
