Japanese: クサガエル(草蛙) - クサガエル（英語表記）reed frog

A general term for small frogs with translucent skin and beautiful colors, belonging to the genus Hyperolius and the family Reed Frogs. There are about 226 species distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa, all of which are small, measuring 2-4 cm in length, and live on shrubs and grass near ponds and streams on flat land. They have small suckers on each of their four fingers, and have excellent jumping ability, jumping distances up to 20 times their body length. They have a remarkable ability to change body color; for example, the East African Rhinoceros frog Hyperolius marmoratus (illustration) can look like a completely different species even though they are the same individual, based on their body color and markings alone.

半透明の皮膚と美しい色彩をもつ小型のカエルで，クサガエル科クサガエル属Hyperoliusの総称。226種ほどがサハラ以南のアフリカ全域に分布し，すべて体長2～4cmほどの小型種で，平地の池沼や流れ付近の低木や草の上にすむ。四肢の各指には小さい吸盤があり，またジャンプ力が優れ体長の20倍ほどの距離を跳ぶ。体色変化の能力に優れ，例えば東アフリカ産イロカエクサガエルHyperolius marmoratus（イラスト）は，体色と斑紋だけでは，同一個体でもまるで別種のように見える。
