Konohanori (English name) Laingia pacifica Yamada

Japanese: コノハノリ（英語表記）Laingia pacifica Yamada

A species of the Rhodophyceae family (illustration) with a membranous, leaf-like body, midrib and lateral veins, reminiscent of the beautiful, thin, purple-red leaves of higher plants. It grows on rocks in the bathyal zone off the coasts of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Korea, and Kamchatka. When young, it is elliptical or obovate, but as it grows, the leaves develop cracks at the edges and fall off, leaving only the midrib and lateral veins. The cysts that develop from fertilized eggs are almost spherical and short-stalked, and form on or between the veins. Similar species include Holmesia japonica (Okam.) Okam., Delesseria violacea (Harv.) Kylin, Pseudophycodrys rainosukei Tokida, and Hemineura schmitziana De Toni et Okam.

体は膜質，葉状で，中肋と側脈をもち，美しい紫紅色の薄い高等植物の葉を思わせる紅藻綱コノハノリ科の1種（イラスト）。北海道沿岸，サハリン，朝鮮，カムチャツカ沿岸の漸深帯の岩上に生育する。幼時は楕円形または倒卵形などであるが，生長するにつれて葉部の縁辺に裂け目ができるなどして脱落し，後に中肋と側脈のみを残すようになる。受精卵から発達した囊果はほぼ球形で短柄をもち，脈の上や脈と脈の間に形成される。似た種類にスズシロノリHolmesia japonica (Okam.) Okam.，ヌメハノリDelesseria violacea (Harv.) Kylin，ライノスケコノハノリPseudophycodrys rainosukei Tokida，ハブタエノリHemineura schmitziana De Toni et Okam.などがある。
