A method of communication that transmits information using discrete signals (digital signals) such as binary codes of "present" or "absent" or even ternary codes. Information can be digital, such as the data signal from a digital computer, or analog signals, such as those used in telephone calls, in which the information is directly converted into a proportional amount of electricity. Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), the most common method of digitally transmitting analog signals, was invented by A.H. Reeves of England in 1937 and theoretically studied by C.E. Shannon of the United States. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
