German tenor. Born in Kusel, Rhineland-Palatinate, to parents who were musicians, he studied at the Freiburg Conservatory. He made his opera debut at the Stuttgart Opera in 1955. From 1960, he also performed at the Bavarian State Opera and guest sang at opera houses around the country. While he established his reputation in operas by Mozart and R. Strauss, he also worked as an oratorio singer and lied singer. He left behind many great recordings, including Das Lied von der Erde, in which he performed with Klemperer and C. Ludwig. He died young, falling down the stairs, just before reaching his prime. He is still celebrated as a lyric tenor like no other, with his beautiful voice and singing rich in nuance.

ドイツのテノール歌手。ラインラント・ファルツ州クーゼルで音楽家の両親のもとに生まれ，フライブルク高等音楽学校で学ぶ。1955年シュツットガルト歌劇場でオペラ・デビュー。1960年からバイエルン国立歌劇場の舞台にも立ち，各地の歌劇場に客演。モーツァルトやR.シュトラウスのオペラで名声を確立する一方，オラトリオ歌手，リート歌手としても活躍。クレンペラー，C.ルートウィヒと共演した《大地の歌》をはじめ数々の名唱を録音に残す。最盛期を前に，階段からの転落事故で夭逝(ようせい)した。美しい発声とニュアンスに富んだ歌唱で，不世出のリリック・テノールとして今も称えられている。
