Digital (English spelling)

Japanese: ディジタル（英語表記）digital

It is often written as digital. For example, a quantity that has a certain minimum unit and can only take on discrete values that are integer multiples of that unit, such as the number of people or the amount of money, is called a digital quantity. In contrast, a quantity that can take on any infinitesimally small value, such as the length or weight of an object, and therefore has no minimum unit and can take on continuous values, is called an analog quantity. Digital quantities can be expressed as numbers or codes. Systems that handle digital quantities, such as calculations, storage/reproduction, transmission, and display, are made by combining elements that can only take on discrete states, such as on and off switches, the presence and absence of a pulse, and on and off voltage, and process information based on logical operations.

デジタルと表記することも多い。たとえば人の数や金の額のように，ある最小単位があって，その整数倍のとびとびの(離散的)値しかとらない量をディジタル量という。これに対して，物の長さや重さのように無限に細かい任意の値をとりうる量，したがって最小単位が考えられず連続的な値をとりうる量をアナログanalog量という。ディジタル量は数字や符号で表すことができる。ディジタル量を扱う計算，記憶･再生，伝送，表示などのシステムは，スイッチのオンとオフ，パルスの有と無，電圧のオンとオフなどの離散的な状態しかとらない要素を組み合わせて作り，論理演算をもとにして情報処理をする。
