Marl - marl

A sedimentary rock of intermediate composition formed by a mixture of fine-grained clastic mudstone and calcium carbonate, the main component of limestone. It is mainly composed of clay minerals and calcite. It is also called marl. It ranges from calcareous mudstone to muddy limestone or impure limestone, and calcium carbonate accounts for 30-70%. The calcium carbonate component is chemically separated and precipitated from seawater, and is thought to be related to the life activities of living organisms.

細粒砕屑(さいせつ)粒子の泥質物質と、石灰岩の主成分である炭酸カルシウムが混合してできた中間的組成の堆積(たいせき)岩。おもに粘土鉱物と方解石からなる。マールともいう。石灰質泥岩とよばれるものから、泥質石灰岩あるいは不純石灰岩とよばれるものまで含み、炭酸カルシウム成分は30～70％を占めている。炭酸カルシウム成分は海水から化学的に分離沈殿したものであるが、生物の生活作用が関連していると考えられている。
