...The representative poets of this period (1830-70) were Gonçalves Dias (1823-64) and the abolitionist poet Castro Alves (1847-71). The founder of the Brazilian novel was essentially Joaquim Manuel de Macedo (1820-82), but it was José de Alencar (1829-77) who greatly expanded the scope of the genre. He wrote many novels depicting the landscapes and people of various parts of Brazil, including the Indian-themed The Guarani (1857), and created a distinctively Brazilian literary style.
