The Great Karakoram stretches from 74°E of the Ishqman River, the source of the Gilgit River, a member of the Indus River system, in the west to 78°20′E of the Shayok River bend in the east, covering a length of about 500 km from west-northwest to east-southeast, with a maximum width of about 100 km from north to south. The Great Karakoram, which consists of a series of major watersheds with an average altitude of 7,000 m, is made up of seven mountain ranges called muztāgh, which means "ice mountain" in Turkish and Turkic, including Batūra, Hispar, and Baltoro. The Lesser Karakoram, which runs parallel to the southern part of the Karakoram at an altitude of about 6,000 m, consists of five mountain ranges, including Rakaposhi, Haramoshi, and Saltoro.
