[Died] October 7, 2014. Hamburg, Germany German novelist. He was drafted during World War II, and after the war he studied at the University of Hamburg. After working as a journalist he began his life as a writer. He was a member of the "Group of '47." His writing style was influenced by Ernest Hemingway. His breakthrough work was So zärtlich war Suleyken (1955), a humorous collection of folk tales based on life in his hometown, and he continued to be active in writing ever since. He was also active politically. His representative works include the novels Es waren Habichte in der Luft (1951), Duel mit dem Schatten (1953), Deutschstunde (The Hour of the National Language) (1968), which depicts the conflict between power and art in the Nazi era with the theme of the ban on painting, and Das Vorbild (1973). He was also a master of short stories, and his work was collected in the Complete Collection of Short Stories (Gesammelte Erzählungen) (1970). His other plays include Zeit der Schuldlosen (The Time of the Innocents) (1961), Zeit der Schuldigen (The Time of the Sinners) (1961), Der Verlust (The Loss) (1981), and Ein Kriegsende (The End of War) (1984). He received the Thomas Mann Prize in 1984 and the Goethe Prize in 1999.

Lenz, Heinrich Friedrich Emil

Born: February 24, 1804 in Dorpat, Estonia
Died: February 10, 1865. Roman German physicist and geophysicist. His Russian name was Emil Khristianovich Lenz. His father was the magistrate of Dorpat. After graduating from Dorpat University, he participated in a round-the-world voyage of exploration as a geophysicist (1823-26). He then engaged in academic research in the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (34). He was a physics lecturer at the Naval Academy and the Normal School, and became a professor of physics at St. Petersburg University (36). He was a member of the Physical Society of Frankfurt am Main and the Geophysical Society of Berlin. He discovered Lenz's law of the direction of electromagnetic induction in 1834, conducted experiments on induced electromotive force, and researched the temperature change of electrical resistance, as well as many quantitative experiments on the magnetic, thermal, and chemical effects of electric currents, and contributed to the improvement of precision measurement techniques and equipment. He also conducted many surveys and research as a geophysicist.

Lenz, Jakob Michael Reinhold

Born: January 12, 1751 in Zestwegen
[Died] May 24, 1792, Moscow German playwright. Born to a pastor, he studied theology at the universities of Dorpat (Tartu) and Königsberg. He met Goethe in Strasbourg in 1771, and followed him to Weimar in 1776, but was banished there soon after after a dispute with Goethe over Frau Stein. He later went insane and died in the streets of Moscow. Along with FM Klinger, he is considered one of the important playwrights of the Sturm und Drang movement, and wrote works based on his personal encounters and experiences. His works include the comedy Der Hofmeister (1774), Die Soldaten (The Soldiers) (1776), and Anmerkungen übers Theater (1774).

[Died] May 12, 1998, Munich German poet and novelist. Heavily influenced by F. Kafka, his works include Gedichte (1936) (Collection of Poems), Der russische Regenbogen (Russian Rainbow) (1959), Verlassene Zimmer (The Deserted Room) (1966), and Der Letzte (The Last Man) (1984).

ドイツの物理学者,地球物理学者。ロシア名は Emil Khristianovich Lenz。父はドルパトの行政長官。ドルパト大学卒業後,世界一周の探検航海に地球物理学者として参加 (1823~26) 。その後もカスピ海,コーカサス地方の学術調査などに従事。ペテルブルグ科学アカデミー会員 (34) 。海軍士官学校,師範学校などの物理学講師を経て,ペテルブルグ大学物理学教授 (36) 。フランクフルトアムマイン物理学会,ベルリン地球物理学会会員。 1834年の電磁誘導の向きに関するレンツの法則の発見,誘導起電力に関する実験,電気抵抗の温度変化に関する研究をはじめ,電流の磁気作用,熱作用,化学作用に関する多くの定量的実験を行い,精密計測技術・装置の改善にも貢献した。また地球物理学者として多くの調査・研究を行なった。

M.クリンガーとともにシュトゥルム・ウント・ドラングの重要な劇作家とされ,個人的な出会いや体験に立脚した作品を書いた。喜劇『家庭教師』 Der Hofmeister (1774) ,『兵士たち』 Die Soldaten (76) のほか,『演劇論』 Anmerkungen übers Theater (74) など。
