A marine animal belonging to the order Coelenterata, class Anthozoa, subclass Octocorallia, order Coeliacidae, family Polycorallidae. It is the only extant species in the order Coelenterata, and is widely distributed in shallow coral reef areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and in the waters off Japan, south of the Amami Islands. The colonies form a calcareous fan-shaped skeleton that branches out widely, and sometimes form nodular colonies with a diameter of more than 1 meter. The surface of the skeleton is gray-blue, but when it is cut open, the inside is a vivid indigo blue. A main tube with a diameter of about 1 mm is distributed over the entire surface of the skeleton, and countless thin tubes with a diameter of 0.2 mm fill the spaces between them. The main tubes house pale brown polyps, which have eight tentacles with pinnate projections, a characteristic of octocorals.
