Greek rhetorician and historian of the late 1st century BC. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Halicarnassus in Asia Minor, he lived in Rome from about 30 BC, where he taught rhetoric and studied Roman history. His treatises on rhetoric and literary criticism include On Word Order, On Imitation, and On Thucydides, and he advocated a return to the Attic classical period of the 5th and 4th centuries BC, becoming a pioneer of Atticism. As a historian, he wrote the 20-volume History of Rome, covering the period from the founding of Rome to the beginning of the First Punic War. 前1世紀後半のギリシア人修辞学者,歴史家。生没年不詳。小アジアのハリカルナッソス出身で,前30年頃からローマに居住し,弁論術を教授するかたわらローマ史研究に従事した。修辞学や文芸批評の論文には《語順論》《模倣論》《トゥキュディデス論》などがあり,前5~前4世紀のアッティカ古典時代への復帰運動を提唱して,〈アッティカ主義〉の先駆者となった。歴史家としては,ローマの建国から第1次ポエニ戦争のはじめまでを扱った《ローマ古代史》20巻を著した。
