Kiyonori Konakamura
Year of death: October 11, 1895
Year of birth: 1822.1.22 (Bunsei 4.12.30)
A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo and Meiji periods. Commonly known by names such as Kinshiro and Kin'emon. His pen name was Yoshunro. He was the son of Harada Jirohachi and Miyo. Born in Edo. His parents died at a young age, and he was raised by his mother's younger sister, Konakamura, and inherited the family business. His adopted family was a merchant family, but he handed the business over to his second son early on and devoted himself to the study of national history and the ritsuryo code. He studied the ritsuryo code under Murata Haruno and Ino Inosuke, and in 1855 (Ansei 2) he became a student of Motoori Uchito. He held various positions, including lecturer at the Japanese Studies Kodansho, and after the Meiji Restoration he served in the Dajokan (Great Council of State). From 1879 (Meiji 12) he was involved in the compilation of the Koji Ruien (later becoming chairman of the compilation committee), and in 1882 he became a professor at the University of Tokyo, where he worked hard to establish a classical studies course. His book A Brief History of Kabuki and Music was a pioneering achievement in this field. Other works include "Miscellaneous Thoughts on Yoshunro," "History of the Government System," and "Lectures on the Interpretation of Imperial Laws." <References> Nakamura Shuka, "A Short Biography of Professor Konakamura Seiken" (Konakamura Seiken, "A Guide to the History of National Studies")
