Joetsu [city] - Joetsu

Japanese: 上越[市] - じょうえつ
Joetsu [city] - Joetsu
A city in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture. Located in the lower reaches of the Arakawa River, it occupies almost the entire Takada Plain as well as the western half of the Higashikubiki Hills. In 1971, Takada City and Naoetsu City merged to form a city. Takada developed from an early modern castle town, and has the character of a commercial district, with castle ruins parks and samurai residences still remaining. Naoetsu faces the mouth of the Arakawa River and is home to Naoetsu Port, making it a coastal industrial district for heavy chemical industries where large companies such as non-ferrous metals, steel, and machinery companies are concentrated. The city is connected to Sado Island by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Shinetsu Main Line, Echigo Tokimeki Railway, and Hokuriku Expressway. The urban areas between Takada and Naoetsu are also tending to become a single zone with commercial facilities, and are developing as the center of the southwestern part of the prefecture. In January 2005, the towns of Yasuzuka, Urakawara, Oshima, and Maki in Higashikubiki County, the towns of Kakizaki, Ogata, Yoshikawa, Itakura, Kiyosato, Kubiki, Nakago, and Miwa in Nakakubiki County, and the town of Nadachi in Nishikubiki County were incorporated. Area: 973.81 km2 . Population: 203,899 (2010).
