…Flemish painter. Also spelled Matsys, Matsijs, Metsys, Metsijs. Born in Leuven. Registered as a free master in Antwerp in 1491. Records of his full-scale artistic activity begin after the St. Anne Altarpiece (1507-09). The figures in his religious paintings are full of dramatic expressions, and he excelled in depicting grotesque and cruel figures reminiscent of Bosch. On the other hand, his depiction of the Madonna and Child shows the influence of Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato (soft shading like disappearing smoke). …
