A Buddhist term. The act of scattering purified water to purify oneself and the dojo. The purified water for shasui is placed in a small metal bowl called a shasui-ki. When shasui is performed, it is placed on a desk or held in the left hand, and the water is stirred with the tip of a sanjo (a walking stick) held in the right hand while chanting a mantra to give the purified water spiritual power, and then the water is scattered by waving the sanjo in a certain manner. Shasui can be performed by a doshi (master) while seated, or by a shasui master or incantator (shushi) circulating around the dojo. There is also a simple shasui that is performed by the practitioners when they enter the dojo. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
