The narrowest part of the isthmus that connects North and South America. It stretches east from the eastern border of Costa Rica to the mainland of South America, forming an S-shape for about 650 km, dividing the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The whole area forms the Republic of Panama, and the Panama Canal runs through almost the center, connecting the two oceans. It includes the Isthmus of Chiriqui (western part), the Isthmus of San Blas (central part), which forms the narrowest part (about 50 km wide), and the Isthmus of Darien (eastern part). In the narrowest sense, it can also refer to the Panama Canal area.
