The Self-Defense Forces, whose mission is to defend against direct and indirect aggression, are mainly on land. They are units and organizations that are supervised by the Ground Staff Office and the Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff and the Chief of Staff of the Ground Self-Defense Force. In addition to defending the country, they are also tasked with disaster relief, international peace cooperation activities for reconstruction assistance and peacekeeping. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, the National Police Reserve, which is the parent organization of the Ground Self-Defense Force, was established with about 75,000 personnel. In 1952, it became the National Safety Force, and in July 1954, when the Defense Agency was established, it became the Ground Self-Defense Force. In January 2007, the Defense Agency was elevated to the Ministry of Defense and came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense. The Ground Self-Defense Forces are made up of regional corps, the 1st Helicopter Brigade, the Signal Brigade, etc. The five regional armies are the Northern Army (Hokkaido), the Tohoku Army, the Eastern Army (Kanto and Chubu regions), the Central Army (Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions), and the Western Army (Kyushu and Okinawa regions), each with its own regional headquarters, divisions, brigades, artillery corps (artillery group), anti-aircraft artillery corps (anti-aircraft artillery group), engineering corps, training corps (training regiments), etc. Organizations include research headquarters, supply control headquarters, supply depots, various schools, and hospitals.

主として陸上で，直接侵略および間接侵略に対して防衛することを任務とする自衛隊。陸上幕僚監部ならびに統合幕僚長および陸上幕僚長の監督を受ける部隊および機関。国土の防衛のほか，災害派遣，復興支援・平和維持のための国際平和協力業務などの任務を帯びる。 1950年の朝鮮戦争勃発を機に陸上自衛隊の母体となる約7万 5000人の警察予備隊が設置される。 1952年保安隊となり，1954年7月防衛庁の設置に伴い陸上自衛隊となった。 2007年1月防衛庁の防衛省昇格により防衛省所管となる。陸上自衛隊の部隊は方面隊，第1ヘリコプター団，通信団などからなる。方面隊は北部方面隊 (北海道) ，東北方面隊，東部方面隊 (関東地方，中部地方) ，中部方面隊 (中部地方，近畿地方，中国地方，四国地方) ，西部方面隊 (九州地方，沖縄地方) の5個に分けられ，それぞれ方面総監部，師団，旅団，特科団 (特科群) ，高射特科団 (高射特科群) ，施設団，教育団 (教育連隊) などをもつ。機関としては，研究本部，補給統制本部，補給処，各種学校，病院などがある。
