Araliaceae - Araliaceae

Japanese: ウコギ科 - ウコギか(英語表記)Araliaceae
Araliaceae - Araliaceae
A family of dicotyledonous plants in the Apidales order. There are 55 genera and 700 species known, mainly in the tropics, and they are particularly abundant in Southeast Asia and tropical America. Most are tall trees or shrubs, sometimes creeping or herbaceous, and some have a palm-like tree shape. The leaves are palmately compound, but sometimes palmately lobed simple leaves such as in Fatsia japonica (Eight-handed), and are usually alternate, sometimes opposite, or whorled (→phyllotaxis). The flowers are small and pentamerous, and many flowers are gathered in an umbel, often forming a globular inflorescence. The ovary is inferior, and when ripe, it becomes a berry-like drupe. In Japan, there are tall trees such as Kalopanax japonica and Fukanoki, shrubs such as Aralia aralia and Fatsia japonica, perennials such as Tochiba-ninjin (Tochiba-ninjin), and creeping plants such as Ivy (Kizuta). The buds of plants such as the elm tree and Aralia aralia are edible, Korean ginseng is well known for its medicinal properties, and ivy, alaria, and the plant commonly known as "kapok" (different from the poplar tree) are popular ornamental plants.
