Also called thyroid stimulating hormone. Abbreviation of thyroid stimulating hormone. A hormone secreted from the anterior pituitary gland, it binds to membrane receptors on thyroid follicular cells and promotes thyroid function. It is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 28,000. It regulates the thyroid gland and thyroid hormones, and if this balance is disturbed, normal thyroid function will not be maintained. Excessive secretion can cause cretinism.

甲状腺刺激ホルモンともいう。Thyroid stimulating hormoneの略。脳下垂体前葉から分泌され，甲状腺濾胞(ろほう)細胞の膜受容体に結合して，甲状腺の機能を促進させるホルモン。糖タンパク質で分子量はおよそ２万8000。甲状腺ホルモンとは相互に調節しあっており，このバランスがくずれると正常な甲状腺の機能が営まれなくなる。分泌過多の場合にはクレチン病などが生じる。
