French painter. Born in Perpignan in the south of France. After studying painting in Montpellier and Lyon, he went to Paris in 1681. The following year he won the Prix de Rome, but gave up on going to Italy in order to become a portrait painter rather than a history painter. He was active at the court of Louis XIV thereafter. While Largillière, who was a contemporary of his, mostly used citizens as models, he painted portraits of high-ranking officials. Reflecting the trend towards Baroque style at the end of the 17th century, he produced heavy, extravagant works in the style of Van Dyck. His representative works include "Louis XIV" (1701, Louvre Museum). He was also influenced by Rembrandt, and produced naturalistic works such as "Portrait of a Mother" (1695, same as above). He died in Paris. [Katsumi Miyazaki] [References] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
