Cheap lodging - Kitchen

Cheap lodging - Kitchen

A lodging facility during the transitional period when people were moving from sleeping outdoors to staying in inns. From the Genki (1570-73) to the Keicho (1596-1615) eras, common people would travel with dried rice, rice, pickled radishes, etc., and would only receive hot water at lodging facilities. Since people had to pay for the fuel, i.e. firewood and wood money, these lodging facilities were called kochin-yuku (wooden lodging facilities). Horses used more hot water than people, so the wood money was also higher for horses. In 1611 (Keicho 16), it was set at 3 mon for people and 6 mon for horses, but the difference was narrowed later. In 1665 (Kanbun 5), the master was paid 16 mon and the servant 6 mon. This difference between master and servant was abolished in 1866 (Keio 2). A step further from this mochi lodging was the mochi rice lodging, where you would buy rice prepared in advance at the lodging house, cook your own meals, and pay the mochi fee plus the cost of the rice. However, cooking your own meals while traveling is hard, so gradually inns came into being that provided snacks, food, and alcohol. Even after the mochi lodging developed into inns, there remained lodgings where you could stay for cheap fees such as roof fee and futon fee, and even after the Meiji period, they were still called mochi lodging, and still exist in outlying areas today.
