Fire Island

Japanese: 火焼島 - かしょうとう

A small island on the southeast coast of Taiwan, 25km east of Taitung City, renamed Green Island in 1949. It is about ^15km2 in size. Like Lanyu to the south, it is made of andesite. It is surrounded by coral reefs. The southern half of the island is dominated by cliffs, with Mount Huoshao (281m) to the west and Mount Amei (275m) to the east. The northern part is low-lying and inhabited by Han Chinese who engage in fishing and agriculture, but anthropological findings suggest that in prehistoric times Green Island was a transit point for indigenous Taiwanese people migrating from the Philippine archipelago to the east coast of Taiwan. During the Japanese colonial period, a prison for serious criminals was set up, and after the war, the Kuomintang government imprisoned political prisoners there, but since the lifting of martial law, it has developed into a tourist destination.
