Diego Suarez

A port city in the southwestern Indian Ocean, at the northern tip of Madagascar. Local name: Antseranana. Population: 40,443 (1975). A strategically important port in the country, facing the bay of the same name. There are port facilities such as a dry dock from the time when it was a French naval base. It is a distribution center for vanilla, coffee, rice, sisal, etc., and has factories for steel, soap, bricks, etc., and an airport. It was occupied by France in 1885 and made into the colonial capital. It was used as a naval base in 1901, but has since been withdrawn.

インド洋南西部，マダガスカル北端の港湾都市。現地名アンツェラナナAntseranana。人口4万0443(1975)。同国の戦略的な要港で，同名の湾に面している。乾ドックなど，フランス海軍の基地であった時代の港湾施設がある。バニラ，コーヒー，米，サイザル麻などの集散地で，製鉄，セッケン，煉瓦などの工場があり，空港もある。1885年にフランスが占領し，植民地の主都とした。1901年から海軍基地とされたが，現在は撤退している。
