A port city in the southwestern Indian Ocean, at the northern tip of Madagascar. Local name: Antseranana. Population: 40,443 (1975). A strategically important port in the country, facing the bay of the same name. There are port facilities such as a dry dock from the time when it was a French naval base. It is a distribution center for vanilla, coffee, rice, sisal, etc., and has factories for steel, soap, bricks, etc., and an airport. It was occupied by France in 1885 and made into the colonial capital. It was used as a naval base in 1901, but has since been withdrawn.
