Carissimi, G.

... Catholics, who suffered a great deal from the defection of Protestants, turned their attention to the dramatic style of opera, which had recently emerged and was gaining popularity at the time, as a means of educating their followers, and by applying this style to religious themes, they created the oratorio. It is significant that Giacomo Carissimi (1605-74), an early master of the oratorio, was active in the Collegio (college) of the Society of Jesus, which was particularly enthusiastic about missionary work at the time. However, this movement soon spread beyond denominations to other countries, and such outstanding oratorio composers as MA Charpentier in France, Schütz and Bach in Germany, and Handel in England appeared. ...

[Music format and main composers]
As mentioned above, the most important forms of vocal music are theatrical music such as opera and oratorio. When these forms were first established (such as Monteverdi's opera and Giacomo Carissimi's oratorio (1605-74)), the structure of scenes was very fluid, but from the end of the 17th century to the 18th century, a form that regularly alternated aria and recitative gradually became dominant (Allessandro Stradella (1644-82) and A. Scarlatti). In the field of opera, in the 18th century, comic operas with comic elements emerged in each country (such as opera buffa in Italy, opéra comique in France, Singspiel in Germany, and ballad opera in England) in contrast to the high-class opera seria with tragic themes.
