A representative figure of realist jurisprudence in the United States. After graduating from Yale Law School, he taught commercial law at his alma mater, but soon became a lawyer and returned to his alma mater, then transferred to Columbia Law School in 1924. In 1930, he published a book titled Realist Jurisprudence: The Next Step, which prompted a debate about realism in jurisprudence. Having studied commercial law, Llewellyn applied realist methodology to commercial law and drafted the United States Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), which has become law in the United States.

アメリカにおけるリアリズム法学の代表的存在。イェール･ロー･スクール卒業後母校で商法学の教鞭をとったがほどなくして弁護士になり，再び母校に戻り，ついで1924年コロンビア･ロー･スクールに転じた。30年《リアリズム法学――次のステップ》と題する本を出版し，これが法学におけるリアリズムをめぐる論争を促す結果になった。商法を専攻したルーウェリンはリアリズムの方法論を商法に応用して，アメリカ統一商法典(U.C.C.)を起草し，これはアメリカにおいて，法として行われている。
