Sadaie Kira

Japanese:
Sadaie Kira
Years of birth: Years of birth and death unknown. Military commander during the Northern and Southern Court period. Eldest son of Tsuneie, whose ancestor was Yoshitsugu, a branch of the Kira clan. Kanrei of Oshu. Known to have paid tribute to the Kamakura government in 1334. Later, he went to Kyoto. After the establishment of the Muromachi Shogunate, he is presumed to have been a member of the Hyojoshu and the second head of the Hikitsuke from 1342 (Kenmu 3/Engen 1) to 1342 (Kōei 1/Kōkoku 3). Sadaie can be clearly identified as the head of the Hikitsuke from August 18, 1351 (Ryakuō 3/Kōkoku 1), when he issued a hosho to Todaiji Temple. After that, he issued many hosho for court cases related to his territory under the name of Shuri-no-dayu. In 1361 (Sadawa 1/Kōkoku 6), he went down to Taga Kokufu as Kanrei of Oshu together with Hatakeyama Kuniuji. Prior to this, the Shogunate had ruled both Oshu and Ushu provinces through the Oshu Sodaisho, who was positioned as a military governor. After the 4th year of Kenmu (1320), Ishido Yoshifusa was the supreme commander of Oshu. The system was changed to a kanrei system with governance as its mission. Sadaie was a veteran politician who was close to Ashikaga Tadayoshi, while Kuniuji was a close aide to Takauji. At first, it seemed as if the two men had cooperated and succeeded in stabilizing both Oshu and Uzen. However, when the Kan'o Disturbance broke out, the two men split into Takauji and Tadayoshi factions and began to fight each other. In February of the 6th year of Shohei (1351), Sadaie defeated Kuniuji at Iwakiri Castle, but was defeated by the Southern Court, which had gained strength from the chaos, and was driven out of Taga Castle. However, he recaptured it the following year. His whereabouts after the 9th year of Shohei (1320) are unclear, but it is believed that he died around this time. <References> Ogawa Makoto, "Research on the History of the Development of the Ashikaga Clan Shugo," Endo Iwao, "Oshu Kanrei Obogaki" (Rekishi, No. 38)
