An ancient Mesopotamian city located on the left bank of the Euphrates River, about 100 km west of Baghdad, Iraq. It flourished as a key transportation hub, but was destroyed by the Roman Emperor Julian in 363. It was later rebuilt and briefly became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 8th century.
