Haguro Mirror

Japanese: 羽黒鏡 - はぐろきょう

This refers to mirrors discovered in Mitarai Pond, commonly known as Kagami-ga-ike, located in front of Dewa Shrine on Mount Haguro in Yamagata Prefecture. Approximately 600 Japanese mirrors from the Heian to Edo periods are known. Of these, those from the late Heian period have a thin base and the backs of the mirrors feature soft, embossed floral and bird motifs, exuding elegant beauty. Furthermore, because these mirrors have been in the pond for a long time, they have a dull, dark black color. The refined texture and elegant patterns blend well together to create a unique beauty, which is why they are called Haguro mirrors and highly valued.

山形県羽黒山の出羽神社の前にある，俗称〈鏡ヶ池〉と呼ばれる御手洗池から発見された鏡をいう。平安時代から江戸時代までの和鏡で，約600面ほどが知られている。このうち平安後期のものは鏡胎が薄く，鏡背には花鳥を題材とした文様が柔らかい調子で浮き出されており，優雅な美しさを発揮している。またこれらの鏡は長く池中にあったため，艶（つや）のない暗黒色を呈している。この味わい深い質感と優雅な文様はよく調和して独特の美しさがあるところから，羽黒鏡と呼ばれ珍重されている。
