The city occupies the western part of the Izumo Plain downstream of the Hii River, the western part of the Shimane Peninsula, and the inland mountainous area in the northeastern part of Shimane Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. Imaichi, the city's center, developed as a market town from the Muromachi period onwards. The city area is mainly agricultural, with low, humid rice paddies at an altitude of 5 to 10 meters. Cotton industry flourished in the early Meiji period, sericulture from the mid-Meiji period onwards, and spinning factories were established in the Taisho period. Pottery and sake are also produced. In the north are Ichibata Yakushi, Gakuen-ji Temple, and Izumo Taisha Shrine, and in the northwestern tip is Hinomisaki. The city is served by the San'in Main Line, Ichibata Electric Railway, and San'in Expressway. Lake Shinji was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005. In March 2005, Hirata City, Sada Town, Taki Town, Koryo Town, and Taisha Town in Hikawa District were incorporated, and in October 2011, Hikawa Town in Hikawa District was incorporated. 島根県北東部，斐伊(ひい)川下流の出雲平野西部と島根半島西部，内陸の山地を占める市。1941年市制。中心の今市は室町時代以降市場町として発達した。市域は標高５〜10mの低湿な水田を基調とする農業が主。明治初期綿工業，明治中期以降養蚕業が興り，大正になって紡績工場が立地。陶器，酒なども生産。北部には一畑薬師，鰐淵(がくえん)寺，出雲大社があるほか，北西端に日御碕(ひのみさき)がある。山陰本線，一畑電車，山陰自動車道が通じる。2005年に宍道湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年３月平田市，簸川郡佐田町，多伎町，湖陵町，大社町を，2011年10月簸川郡斐川町を編入。624.36km²。17万1485人（2010）。
