A container woven from thin, split bamboo. Although the distinction between a basket and a sieve is unclear, a sieve is shallow, circular, and somewhat coarsely woven, and is often used for cooking. Because water leaks out of it, it is said that "water in a sieve" is used to express waste, and "zaru go" is used to express poor Go playing. The 10th century Wamyōshō uses the character sori and reads it as mugisukui, describing it as a basket for boiling barley, while the 15th century Gegakushū reads sori as ikaki and describes it as a miso strainer. Even today, it is called ikaki in Kyoto and Osaka, and zaru in Tokyo, but the origin of the word is said to be derived from ikaki (a boiled water pail) and zaru (a sieve) from sori.
