Mizuwarabi - Mizuwarabi

An annual fern of the family Pterygoceae. It has a short rhizome with a few scales and produces soft, glabrous leaves in bundles. There are two types of leaves: vegetative and sporophylls. Vegetative leaves are smaller than sporophylls, have reticulate veins, are deeply pinnately lobed 2-3 times, and may have buds at the base of the pinnae. Sporophylls grow to 50 cm and are even finer than vegetative leaves. The lobes are horn-shaped, and the edges fold inward to produce sporangia. They are common in warm regions, growing in rice paddies and swamps. They are used as ornamental plants in freshwater fish tanks, but are also eaten in Southeast Asia.

ミズワラビ科の一年生シダ。根茎は短く、わずかに鱗片(りんぺん)があり、柔らかい無毛の葉を束生する。葉には栄養葉と胞子葉の2型がある。栄養葉は胞子葉よりも小さく、網状脈をもち、2、3回羽状に深裂し、羽片基部に芽をつけることがある。胞子葉は50センチメートルになり、栄養葉よりもさらに細かく裂ける。裂片は角(つの)状で、辺縁が内側へ折れて胞子嚢(のう)を生ずる。暖地に多く、水田や沼地に生える。淡水魚の水槽に観賞用として利用されるが、東南アジアでは食用にもする。
